Point, Process, Project! An analogue filmmaking workshop (7/11/25)

The Point, Process, Project! Workshop was led by Joanna Byrne, an artist filmmaker who takes collaborative, tactile, performative and sustainable approaches to working with analogue film. In an intensive, one-day workshop, she introduced Super 8 filmmaking techniques to selected staff and research students from across six schools in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures.

The workshop involved filming on campus with super 8 cameras (the ‘point’), developing the films in the Fine Art Building darkroom (the ‘process’) and then screening the films on an 8mm projector in the Clothworkers North Building cinema (the ‘project’).

Thanks to generous funding from CePRA and the School of Media and Communication Research Events Fund, the workshop was free for all participants. All materials (including cameras and film) were provided, and the finished films were be professionally digitised and made available to the group.

Joanna Byrne’s work has been screened internationally at film festivals and exhibitions. Recent projects include 'Past Lives', an expanded film installation for Bradford 2025 commissioned by Yorkshire Contemporary, and Reimagining Relationships with Urban Nature, an interdisciplinary research project connecting communities to urban green space through creative workshops (with University of Leeds, University of Bradford and Natural England).
